JOUR1111 - Lecture 2

The last thing you think of when your logging into facebook is hmm I wonder what type of web iteration I am using right now. Because I know you are all dying for me to answer this life-changing question, I will.  In fact there are actually three different web iterations. Oh and I actually learnt this at my second JOUR1111 lecture in case your wondering, no i don't spend my days researching what type of web I use. So, lets start at the very beginning, before you even get to web, you’ve got your “old media” its all your old school favs, the newspaper that you peruse over a twinings or Tetley (personally I prefer dilmah but this isn’t about tea), magazines that came in handy for a school cut out project, radio that you play when your ipod dies in the car and of course television. All of these are basically platforms for mass communication.
Then it goes to web 1.0, which is very company and business focused and very advertising friendly. Its so straightforward and choc a block full of content.
Then web 2.0 comes along, this is the social web. Its all about social networking; Facebook, blogger, twitter, instagram, tumbler, Skype basically about being connected and interactive on the Internet. During the lecture an episode of one of my favourite tv shows ever, the I.T crowd was showed to demonstrate how much social networking has evolved and how much influence it has over how we go about our daily lives, what we do, who we see and what we consume.
Then there is also web 3.0 the semantic web, which is dedicated to individuals. Its all about tailor making the web for your individual interests, hyperlocalisation of news and advertising. Is this a good thing? Will we all turn into self-absorbent people who only have cares for what floats around in our minds and our general knowledge will escape us?  Hmm… well my little web iterations rant is over, if you have read this and feel like you have wasted minutes you’ll never get back, I send my sincere apologies!
