“If it makes you
laugh, if it makes you cry, if it rips our your heart, that’s a good picture.”
Eddie Adams
This was the quote that summed up the week 4 lecture. The
gist of it was all about photojournalism. I found this lecture quite interesting
and entertaining as there were many examples of photojournalism that really
inspired and awed me.
Dr Redman went
through the history of picture stories, going way back to indigenous cave
paintings, old literature books, and biblical stories displayed in memorising stained
glass windows. It amazed me how producing images has revolutionised over the
years, from the first black and white image produced, to the first colour photo
which had the caption
“The first news photograph produced in nature’s hues.”
To think that photographers didn’t know exactly what photo
they had shot until much later when the film was developed seems archaic
compared to nowadays when a photo can be taken, uploaded, edited, and viewed by
thousands of people in a matter of minutes. Advances in technology have also
introduced ‘Digital manipulation’ allowing the social construction of beauty to
be expressed, which we all know can be distorted at times. (By that I mean all
the time, have we ever seen something that could possibly be seen as even a
slight flaw on celebrities that grace the covers of magazines?) OH MY GOD
BEYONCES THIGHS ARE TOUCHING WE BETTER MAKE THEM LOOK A PLASTIC BARBIE DOLL
ASAP!…

I could entertain
you with a lot more photoshop wonders but its time to move onto how to take a
great photo. Dr Redman explained the basics, Framing, Focus, Angle, Exposure,
Timing, and essentially capturing “The moment”. For me this photo and caption explain what a good
photo is.
“A picture has no meaning at all if it cant tell a
story”Eetu Silanpaa
The remainder of the lecture discussed photo journalism
in moving pictures, dating back to Hitler propaganda, to more recent times of
news broadcasting and mobile phones for uploading live videos to social
networking sites. So there we have it, all about our week 4 VISION lecture. Yay.
