Reflecting on my first university lecture, a
novice journalism student, I naturally made my way to the very back of the
lecture theatre. I sat down and a few minutes later I started hoping that my
choice of seating position wasn’t reflective of my ambitions for my future in
journalism. I thought to myself, I should probably be getting involved in
everything possible, because in a nutshell that’s what a journalist does. This
thought was then justified when the power point screen infront of me had the
quote “I became a journalist to come as close as possible to the heart of the
world”.
It was then that my lecturer told us that
very soon we would all be tweeting and blogging away. I never thought of myself
as one of those people that tweet and blog about every single little thing that
may of happened in the day or every emotion you may be feeling at any given
time. Like honestly those people that post things like “I’m dying of starvation
bring me some food” I just think… was it really essential for the social media
world to know that? That might just be my biased opinion but I’m happy to hear
otherwise? Anyway, I now realize that blogging is so much more then that. It’s
an immediate outlet for creativity to flow without judgment, interests and
opinions to form and basically just every day rambling that can leave you
captivated. Now that I have been made to create a blog, I’m actually quite
appreciative, it’s such a new and exploding platform for writing that
strengthens the bonds of social media. I’m not quite sure what this blog will
bring to the table, compulsory journalism lectures and assessments aside, but
we shall soon find out!
